What did you study in school (or go on to study in university/college)?

I went to university for Landscape Architecture and have no formal art education.

Why did you choose to become an artist?

I feel that I was always wired to be an artist. Growing up, drawing was always something that made sense to me, and something I could excel at. After completing my bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture, I made the decision to pursue art full time so that I could foster this talent and have the opportunity to reach my full potential. To me, it didn’t make sense to try to be anything else, for I don’t think another path could fulfill my love of creating quite the same; I made this my only option and went for it!

What was your main fear about pursuing art as a career and how did you overcome it?

My main fear was not being able to support myself financially as an artist, and being forced to pursue it part-time. Having @timpackerfinearts as my mentor helped me see what a successful art career looked like and the possibilities of taking this path. Our meetings really inspired me and helped me recognize that with dedication and perseverance, I could make it work.

Who is there that has been an influence on your art career?

Honestly, the first person I told my dreams of becoming a full-time artist to was my (ex)boyfriend in university; his encouragement and support at that time really helped me to make bigger plans for myself… had he not believed in me, the path to where I am today might have been a little longer! The next big influence was my mentor Tim Packer for reasons stated above, and not to mention the network of family, friends and strangers that have showed me their support over the years!

What would you say to someone wanting to be an artist?

My best advice would be to cultivate perseverance and discipline over everything else. Persevere through the doubts and the setbacks and use your self-discipline to perfect your craft and accomplish your goals. Realize that there is so much more to being an artist than producing artwork, you need to acquire a business mindset and some thick skin! All in all, though it is a bit of a cliché, believe in yourself and practice really does make perfect!
